DESCRIPTION: SAIPAN - Early in the morning of 26 June 1944, about 150 Japs broke through the front lines and surrounded the engineer area on three sides immediately adjoining the airfield. In a pitched "battle that lasted for several hours, the Japs were killed almost to the last man. One Jap, however, sneaked through and set fire to the Republic P-47 pictured here next day. He was shot before he could get away.
