Caption | This Boeing B-29 "Superfortress", returning from a raid on Yokohama, Japan, landed with both of the right engines out. The outboard propeller was feathered; the inboard propeller had come off during the flight and ripped through the side of the plane. The inboard engine was white hot when the plane landed; here, fire-fighters spray foamite on the engine, trying to check the flames. Iwo Jima, Bonin Islands, May 1945. |
